Stencils and 3D embossing for attractive backgrounds

Needle & Paper

Hello friends,

This will be a short one, as I simply wanted to show you how I made two sweet cards using the same stamp set and a simple alcohol marker colouring but creating attraction by adding interest to the background.

So, in both cases, I think the focal point remains on the main stamped and coloured image but there is something in the background that catches the eye.

For this first one, I stamped and coloured the girl, and accessories. Then I selected the stencil and distress inks. This particular plaid stencil is nice because you do not have to turn or layer, you can create the plaid effect from the first time. I chose only 2 distress inks, first mustard seed from the centre out, and then I went with wild honey just a few strokes on top to highlight some areas of the pattern. Then I simply used glue dots to arrange the images in the centre.  The sentiments are from the Sending You Sentiments stamp set from Honey Bee Stamps.

For the second card, the process of stamping and colouring was exactly the same, but this time, I used a 3D embossing folder from Crafter’s Companion with a cable knit effect, I gotta say, this was pretty fun. I used a thicker bright white cardstock, 130 lbs, but I think one can use 100 or probably even 80 lbs. Then, using a very light hand, I brushed some distress ink in Salty Ocean to enhance the textured background a little bit. The message is part of the same stamp set as the girl image Winter Wear from Concord & 9, I stamped and cut it using a round die and placed it in a corner with some twine under it

I finished both cards with a few crystal embellishments from Studio Katia

These tricks come in handy when one doesn’t have a ton of time to create cards, or when we want the coloured image to be the focal point of the card and want to add just some detail in the background.
