A Different Kind of Shaker Card

A Different Kind of Shaker Card

Hello there!
It’s been a few weeks since my last entry, I ended up getting that terrible flu that’s going around and I’m finally feeling well enough to work and write again.

Later last year, Ilda from I Love Doing All Things Crafty, shared a very cool idea for a frameless shaker card using those document protector sleeves you can get pretty much anywhere but she suggested to get the better quality ones from an office supply store. She also encouraged us to make our own version of this card. I tried her technique by making two cards, but for one of them I gave it a twist, instead of using the plastic protector sheet, I used vellum. Making these cards was actually easier than it looks, and if you are a more visual person, you can go and take a look at Ilda’s video, you’ll be surprised at how simple it is.

I used the fairy stamp set from Hello Bluebird, after I had stamped and coloured my images with Zig Real Brush markers, I cut them out and set them aside. For the main panel of each card, I cut a piece of 4 x 5.25 inch of the Rainbow Bright cardstock pack from Sunny Studio, the process was the exact same for the vellum and the plastic sheet. I cut a slightly bigger rectangle than the main panel, about 4.5 X 5.75 inch. With the main panel centred at the vellum, I cut diagonally the 4 corners of the vellum, then added double sided tape on the back of the main panel, carefully put the confetti on the vellum and placed the main panel on top (print side down) in way that the corners were aligned with the cuts previously made. I folded the extra length of the four sides of the vellum on the back of the main panel, once they were all adhered, I ended up with a pouch and the confetti securely inside.

Once I did that, I simply arranged the images in a way I was happy with and added a sentiment and a few die cut butterflies I had left over from a previous project. Then I adhered this to an A2 Neenah 110 lbs white card, so I ended up with a slim border.

I love working with vellum, it’s one of my favourite media, but in this case I think Ilda’s option is better, you not only appreciate more the confetti but since the vellum is heavier it tends to create an air pocket, not the end of the world, but your card might not be as flat as you expect it to be.

I think this little trick takes the intimidation away from shaker cards, I’ll be my go-to technique from now on. See you next time!
